The Houston Public Library is planning a new neighborhood library on the northwest corner of Griggs Road and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, to replace the existing Alice McKean Young Neighborhood Library at 5260 Griggs Road. The project is funded by the OST/Almeda Corridors Redevelopment Authority, a local government corporation which administers Reinvestment Zone Number Seven (TIRZ #7).
HPL is seeking inviting, friendly architecture to attract and retain customers. HPL facilities should be a beacon in the neighborhood, signaling customer service in a safe, comfortable environment; a place for learning and meeting that is welcoming for the whole community.
Timeline: Design has begun. Construction is planned to begin next summer and will last about a year. The new library is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2014.
This website will house an assortment of documents and images related to the building project. We encourage you to give us feedback on the project by leaving comments. Please note the Guidelines for Comments.

Please use native plants if there are plans to landscape the library. http://www.npsot.org/houston http://www.gchouston.org/Portals/0/MembersDocs/Small_Trees_brochure.pdf http://bringingnaturehome.net/native-gardening/gardening-for-life
I would like to make suggestions for the aesthetics of the building. I think a wall with famous and positive quotes would be great. Also a wall of a large scrabble game or scrabble art work something that is literary and interactive. The building should have at least two nice meeting rooms, maybe one could be converted at times into study rooms. Meaning one large room with the ability to close off space creating a cubicles. Another option might be to have a nice study space and not have to convert the meeting room. Examples can be found here:

Another nice feature of the new library might be include an announcing system for the staff to announce programs and closing.
